Eco Conservation Bukit Lawang is based in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra, Indonesia, on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park—one of the most important rainforests in Southeast Asia and home to critically endangered orangutans.
Our program is open to motivated individuals aged 18+ (Unless accompanied by an adult) who are passionate about conservation, sustainability, and community support. No prior conservation experience is required—training is provided on arrival. What matters most is a positive attitude and respect for wildlife and local communities.
Volunteer activities may include:
Tree planting and habitat restoration
Wildlife and biodiversity monitoring
Community-based conservation projects
Environmental education support
Sustainable farming and land management initiatives
Tasks vary depending on season, weather, and project priorities.
No. We do not allow direct contact with wildlife.
Our work focuses on habitat protection, monitoring, and coexistence, not interaction. This ethical approach ensures the safety and wellbeing of wild animals while supporting long-term conservation outcomes.
Volunteers can typically join for 1 week up to several months, depending on availability and visa conditions. Longer stays allow for deeper impact and involvement in ongoing projects.
Volunteers stay in eco-style jungle accommodation at Landak River at our NGO site. Rooms are simple, comfortable, and designed to support the local economy while keeping environmental impact low.
