Eco Conservation Bukit Lawang began as a seed, a vision in young Josef’s mind to foster positive change in an ever-evolving world. Generations before Josef, his ancestors were the first to settle in the sacred lands along the Landak River. Coming from a farming background, they held deep respect for nature, cherishing its trees, wildlife, and ecosystems. This reverence was passed down to Josef, who, witnessing the negative transformations around him, realized that action was imperative.

 

Farmers and landowners struggled to sustain themselves, while wildlife found itself trapped between farmland and Gunung Leuser National Park, foraging for survival. Conflict arose, and over decades, the respect for nature was lost. Social and economic pressures forced communities into palm oil cultivation or led them to harm wildlife like orangutans to protect their crops.

 

In response, Eco Conservation Bukit Lawang was born.

 

The seed of change planted in Josef’s heart flourished. Through a chance meeting, Josef partnered with Richard from the United Kingdom’s Travel Roots. Their shared vision of a healthier landscape and their combined passions led to the formation of a dedicated team. Their mission: to eliminate wildlife conflict, provide free education for all, and support local farmers who had been misled for decades.
